Nemato Sports Foundation

The Nemato Rowing Club is a rowing development project for the Nelson Mandela Township. It established and develops rowing as a sport for this community and is a major transformation project. It is the main sports transformation project in the Ndlambe municipality, and the first for rowing in the Eastern Cape. The club plays a very important role to play in transforming rowing in South Africa into a fully representative sport. The importance of the club has been recognized by the Minister of Sport and Recreation who opened the club.

The club won the 2006 Jack Cheetham Award as best sports development project in South Africa.

The first rowing competition of the new year (2010) was the Eastern Cape Championships on the Buffalo River in East London.

The Nemato Rowing Club boys under 23 squad won this event.

The Nemato Sports Foundation (NSF) has taken another giant step forward for the development of sport in Ndlambe.  Following a trip to Pretoria by the mainstay of the NSF Jan Blom, the organisation successfully applied to become a recognised non-profit organisation (NPO).   Blom said "We started the NSF as an umbrella organisation that supports our rowing club, gymnastics club and soccer club and being a NPO might help in fundraising."
